WHAT IS THE 2022 SEPA INSTITUTE?

The SEPA 2022 Institute is comprised of a series of workshops, keynote panel(s), and speakers. The convening will act as a space for participants to share curricular, pedagogical and scholarly work for the purposes of nourishing our individual and collective capacities to do this work across our educational and community spaces.

Through this convening, we want to begin cultivating sustainable spaces for educators and community members to be in dialogue with each other around these practices.

“No history, No Self. Know History, Know Self”

“SEPA'' is in reference to both southeastern Pennsylvania and the Spanish word sepa, which means “know.” For decades now, the movements and traditions that have shaped racial/ethnic studies have used the phrase “No history, no self. Know history, know self” which ties back to Pilipinx doctor, intellectual and activist, Dr Jose Rizal’s notion that “a person who does not look back to where he came from would not be able to reach his destination (English translation of Ang hindi lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makarating sa paroroonan).”

With respect to project short term outcomes, we anticipate the establishment of the network that will meet for the June convening. The convening will provide educator development activities and a set of potential collaborators that will work with Swarthmore students during the school year on further developing and implementing their curricular ideas.

We will also produce community-facing reports,  academic and pedagogy-focused papers and a website based on our research findings and community engagement activity. More long term, we hope the project supports and advocates for policies and practices that advance racial/ethnic studies across the preK-higher education ecosystem of the region.
